You’re a fan of Sherlock, the popular BBC/Hartswood Films production set in modern-day London starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor Watson, aren’t you? Perhaps you’re a fan of manga too, although you may not have realised this Sherlock comic was Japanese when you clicked on the article. How many years is it since you first saw the SteveSherlock_Manga Cover_An Moffatt and Mark Gatiss version of the famous character? Is it almost six years? Am I close?

Sherlock: A Study In Pink #1 is arriving for the first time in the USA and UK on Wednesday June 8th thanks to Titan Comics. Presented in the right-to-left reading style, the manga was originally released in Japanese and has now been translated into English.

If you remember the first episode of the TV series, you will be familiar with the story. Very familiar. Sherlock: A Study In Pink #1 is almost a word-for-word, shot-for-shot storyboard of the first twenty minutes of the opening episode of Sherlock released in 2010, and extremely well done it is too.

The story revolves around the first meeting of Holmes and Watson and their first case. The police, led by Detective Inspector Lestrade, are mystified by a series of suicides that appear to be linked. Meanwhile, Watson is an army doctor injured in Afghanistan looking for somewhere to live. A mutual friend puts him in touch with Holmes, who has his eye on a nice little place in central London…

The manga versions of Cumberbatch, Freeman and the other main characters are very convincing in their distinctive manga style. The forlorn and often puzzled expressions of FreemanSherlock_Manga Preview 2 are captured perfectly, as is the thoughtful followed by exploding with excitement style of Cumberbatch. Look how happy Holmes is about the latest serial suicide as Watson looks on.

The story is written by Moffatt and Gatiss, so you know what to expect from them. If you’re not familiar with A Study In Pink, it is a good story. The Sherlock IMDB rating speaks for itself (a new series is being filmed now, by the way).

If you are familiar with it, then I’m sure you can work out if the comic version appeals or not. No knowledge of the Sherlock TV series is needed. In fact it might almost be an advantage if you haven’t seen it as it’ll be completely new to you. It’s certainly one for fans of manga or Sherlock.

Sherlock: A Study In Pink #1 is a 52 page special featuring brand new covers and a US price of $4.99.
