Kodansha USA Publishing announced it has printed over 2.5 million print copies of the English manga release of Attack on Titan.
According to The Asahi Shimbun, Kodansha USA Publishing made the announcement during the July 4th panel at Anime Expo 2015 in Los Angeles, California.
The 2.5 million copies of Attack on Titan in North America may seem unimpressive, when compared to the series’ 40 million in Japan, but the number is significant for the United State market, where the top-performing monthly comic sells over 500,000 copies at best. As TAS states, Attack of Titan Vol. 1 is currently in its 100th week at the New York Times’ list of manga bestsellers, continuing to grow its readership after its debut in North America two years ago.
Chromatic Press, publisher of Sparkler Monthly magazine, elaborates on the significance of the U.S. sales success of Attack on Titan.
Whoa! AoT (in English) is at 2.5 million copies by Vol 15. Fruits Basket was at 2 million by Vol 15, for comparison. https://t.co/e72bl7F2rG

Attack on Titan is HUGE, but this also reminds us of how huge Fruits Basket was during the manga boom. Averaging 130,000 copies per vol?

A translated manga's pretty happy to sell 10-20K copies these days, maybe. So Attack on Titan is ~10x as successful as "successful manga."

Since its original Japanese manga release in 2009, Attack on Titan has gone on to produce various light novel and manga spin-offs, as well as an anime adaptation licensed by Funimation and aired on Cartoon Network in the U.S. Two live action movies based on the series have also been produced in Japan.
The English Attack on Titan release is currently at its 15th volume.
