With the popularity of Thrillbent, it only makes sense that more creators would start making Thrillbent-style comics of their own. The freedom of the medium and the relatively few comics in the format makes it a great way to carve out a special niche. With his comic Template, Quinton Miles takes a cyber-punk story, an interesting format, and a great creative team to bring forth a unique comic that at only a few months old is already showing some great potential.

Alpha is the first in a line of androids based on Ina Britt, one of the best and most effective agents that Oversight has had. Even with all the training and regiment, Alpha goes rogue, destroys an Oversight research facility, and disappears. Six months later, Alpha’s replacement Beta is given her first mission, which quickly goes bad. What follows is a game of wits between Oversight and Alpha, as Oversight seeks to get Beta ready to combat her “big sister”.

Quinton Miles writes a solid sci-fi story, laced with themes of “living up to your ancestors”, as Beta is pushed, and pushes herself, to be better than Alpha. Along with the intrigue of the mole within Oversight, the story quickly becomes one with multiple layers. The introduction of what seems to be another sinister character at the end of issue 3 will surely make the comic even more interesting and eventful.

Artist Andres Quezada gives Template a great aesthetic. The action sequences are done well, as are the slower, more conversational pieces. His art works well with the flip-book style animations that Template is told with, making it a great fit for the format. Nathan Lumm’s colors help to set the mood for the story and the missions that Beta goes on.

In a relatively new field of webcomics, Template and its team are already making a pretty solid mark on the format. They’re telling a story that stands out and doing it in a way that’s eye-catching and original. It’s a welcome addition to a growing format and a comic that should be getting more attention.
