StarTrekGreenLantern

When I first heard that IDW and DC were teaming up to produce a Star Trek/Green Lantern crossover, I was stoked. While not a huge fan of Star Trek in my youth, my interest has been stoked by the recent theatrical releases. On the other hand, Hal Jordan is my favourite hero in the history of ever, so it was a no-brainer that I’d give this a look.

Lo, there be spoilers!

We start on the planet Mogo, which GL fans will know as a former member of the Green Lantern Corps. Ganthet, one of the Guardians of the Universe, is being chased by six power rings – red, yellow, orange, blue, violet and indigo. Ganthet perishes, and his remains, along with the rings, are discovered by crew members from the Enterprise.

Kirk, Spock and company bring his body and the rings back to the ship, where Dr. McCoy and Scotty, respectively, examine them. While these examinations are taking place, the Enterprise is hailed by a Klingon vessel that de-cloaked in close proximity to the ship. The Klingon general, Chang, reveals to Kirk that has hunted the Enterprise and her captain, the “most hated human in the galaxy,” for months hoping to bring Kirk to justice.

During this tete-a-tete, the rings become unstable and three burst through the ship’s hull and into the cosmos. Three others, however, travel in unison to the bridge, where they find new, rather interesting hosts. We have to wait until the final page to get our first glimpse of Hal Jordan, but the wait was worth it.

The issues serves as the perfect opening act to what’s sure to live up to the crossover event of the summer mantle so prominently displayed on the book’s cover. Writer Mike Johnson and artist Angel Hernandez handled the task of melding these icon characters together with ease.

I cannot recommend this issue strongly enough. Run, do not walk, to your local comic shop to get a copy…or better yet, teleport down from the Enterprise.
