Planet Comicon 2013 Day 1
Posted By R. C. Schmidt on April 11, 2013
Kansas City’s pop culture convention dubbed Planet Comicon made its case on day one as one of the Midwest’s, if not the nation’s, top shows.
Featuring a decent list of celebrity guests and a stellar array of comics talent including homegrown stars like Jason Aaron, Jeremy Haun, Blair Butler and Kevin Mellon, Planet Comicon moved into the sizable Bartle Hall, part of the impressively sized Kansas City Convention Center.
One recurring theme I picked up from staff and attendees alike is the surprise at the turnout. Walk-up business was huge this year which might have led to some logistical issues. I say “might have” because it looked to me like the line was moving as well as a line of that size could. Perusing twitter this evening showed very little in the way of negativity directed at the con or its organizers.
This year, in a first for the long running convention, three tracks of programming were added to take advantage of the added space that Bartle Hall could provide. Panel programming varied from features on steampunk costuming to crowdfunding with features dedicated to many of the marquee celebrity guests. Convention goers relished the chance to meet popular creators, learn about differing fandoms or just a break from the crowded main floor.
NerdSpan will also be reporting from Planet Comicon’s second day as well, we invite you to click back for that report soon.
