The BBC will announce the new Doctor Who companion this Saturday at around 18:00 BST, during half time of the FA Cup semi-final Match of the Day Live: Everton versus Manchester United if you want to watch (and have access to the BBC).

The new companion will replace Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) who left the show in 2015 after asking to be written out to take on the roll of Queen Victoria in a major new ITV series. Jenna Coleman joined Doctor Who in 2012 and starred alongside Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.

Filming for the next series of Doctor Who will start this year but will air in 2017. It’s a time of change for the series, with head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat stepping down to be replaced by Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall.

The BBC is very good at keeping secrets, so at this time we don’t know Who(!) the new companion will be, but as always there are rumours. They’re apparently looking for something “a bit different”. Michelle Keegan and Rakhee Thakrar, stars of British soaps and dramas, are perhaps the most likely with Antonia Thomas being a good contender.

Michelle Keegan

Michelle Keegan

Michelle Keegan is a good bet if bookmakers are to be believed with odds of 4-1. The 28 year old actress was in major soap Coronation Street from 2008-2014 and has appeared in other television dramas. She has nerd form too, having appeared in Red Dwarf:Back to Earth as herself.

Rakhee Thakrar

Rakhee Thakrar

Another star of British TV (most notably Eastenders), Rakhee Thakrar, has been a name regularly mentioned in recent months. The 32 year old English Actress won a National Television Award for Outstanding Serial Drama Performance.

Antonia Thomas

Antonia Thomas

Antonia Thomas found fame in teen drama Misfits at Alisha Daniels. Since then she has appeared in comedy Scrotal Recall, BBC One drama The Muskateers and films including Sunshine on Leith, Northern Soul and Survivor.

Ingrid Oliver

Ingrid Oliver

When asked if Ingrid Oliver (Osgood) would make a good companion, Peter Capaldi said“I think she would make a good companion, yeah. I think she’d probably give the Doctor a run for his money in terms of sussing things out”.

Faye Marsay

Faye Marsay (Game of Thrones)

Faye Marsay has appeared in Doctor Who before as Shona in the 2014 Christmas special. Last year there was a leaked story from a very low quality source suggesting Faye Marsay would be the new companion. She’s also appeared in a number of British TV series. Stranger things have happened.

Rose Leslie

Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones)

Rose Leslie is known for playing Ygritte in Game of Thrones, Gwen in Downton Abbey and DS Emma Lane in Luther. Rose Eleanor Arbuthnot-Leslie is also dating (possibly) Christopher Catesby “Kit” Harington, an actor who definitely has been written out of Game of Thrones (…we’ll see). Red hair, Scottish, feisty, I can see that working as a Doctor Who companion.

Maisie Williams

Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones)

In a rumour list that features every actress to ever appear in Game of Thrones, the Doctor Who guest star Maisie Williams was bound to be mentioned. Other Game of Thrones names include Hannah Murray (Gilly) with odds of 16-1, Ellie Kendrick (Meera Reed) at 25-1 and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) at 66-1. There’s also 100-1 on Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister).

Harry Melling

Harry Melling (Harry Potter)

Dudley Dursley from Harry Potter is the grandson of the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton. The Doctor has had male companions before but mostly alongside a female companion so Harry Melling could be an unusual choice, unless Peter Capaldi leaves and the new Doctor is a woman and they want a male companion.

Anyone else? Well there is one name but it’s so ridiculous I shouldn’t mention it. Alright, you’re probably curious now. With odds of 500-1 people have placed bets on Kim Kardashian. Imagine that. Imagine waking up on Sunday thinking you had a bizarre dream where the new Doctor Who companion was Kim Kardashian. Surely that would have to be the work of Missy. Alternatively people are making up bizarre rumours so I’d like to throw in my outside chances of being the new companion: David Hasselhoff (he can handle SciFi with his Knight Rider experience), Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor (Her Majesty The Queen starred alongside Daniel Craig in the opening of the London 2012 Summer Olympics).
