Those meddling kids and their dog are back at it once again in the new animated film, Scooby-Doo! Wrestlemania Mystery. If you’re a fan of Pro-Wrestling, then you know what to expect with a title like this. The Mystery Inc. gang has met many famous people during their hijinks over the years, including The Harlem Globetrotters, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Batman & Robin, and many others. This time they meet the Pro-Wrestlers of the WWE. As it usually goes, this meeting of worlds turns into a mystery that must be solved.
Like most males, I watched Pro-Wrestling when I was younger. It was a welcome escape from reality. There are heroes (“Face”) and there are villains (“Heel”). There is a continuing story full of trials, tragedies, and triumphs. Many people might mock the industry, but the culture and history of Professional Wrestling is far richer than most people will ever know. With this in mind and all the genres of people that the Mystery Inc. gang has run into over the years, this meeting was bound to happen. If you’re a fan of either or both Pro-Wrestling and Scooby-Doo, then you will absolutely enjoy this film. All of the people involved in this film are very respectful of both worlds and it shows in the fact that this film was fun to watch from start to finish.
Yes, the typical Scooby-Doo formula is intact, but as the old saying goes: “Don’t fix what isn’t broken”. I enjoy the fact that even though the character designs haven’t changed, the world around them and how they interact with each other is completely modern. It keeps this property feeling fresh. There’s a reason why they keep producing these Scooby-Doo films. In the case of this story, Scooby & Shaggy win a contest via a WWE Video Game which sends them to an all-expenses-paid trip for the entire gang to WWE City, a mecca for WWE fans. There, the gang meets the Wrestlers of the WWE and get embroiled in another zany mystery. I won’t go into anymore detail so as not to spoil the film. Just know that it was fun to watch. This film was probably one of the more recent Scooby-Doo outings that I actually enjoyed watching. If I’m ever in the mood, I would gladly watch it again.
P.S. If you’re a fan of Young Justice, then there is quite the surprise for you in this film. Considering all the familiar people who worked on this film, it’s a pretty obvious Easter Egg. Thanks, Warner Bros. Animation.
