Lost Girl: Mid-Season 3 Cast Interview
In a fantastic conference call on March 7th with three of Lost Girl‘s stars, the actors were congratulated on the season four renewal, amid our own heartfelt relief that the fae adventures would continue.
We began with Kris Holden-Ried (Dyson), and Anna Silk (Bo). Ksenia Solo (Kenzi) joined the call later. There was talk about prior episodes, the current season with the upcoming final episodes, plus some awfully teasing remarks about the upcoming fourth season; we learned quickly, however, that season four could not be discussed!
What could be discussed, were all the wonderful and heartbreaking shenanigans of the first half of season three. A little insight into the love triangle and Bo realizing Dyson’s love has returned was given, with Kris Holden-Ried expressing gratitude that the writers allowed space for the characters to still be around one another. “I never really liked the idea of pitting Lauren and Dyson against each other because in the end they both love Bo.” Which is a specific strength of the show: a crew of writers that continually play to the actors’ strengths and beliefs in what their characters would do. “Zoie and I,” Kris continued, “we just really wanted to make Dyson and Lauren’s relationship interesting, and the writers have allowed us to do that… [Dyson and Lauren] work together, I respect her and I think she’s learning to respect Dyson a little more.”
As we continue to watch Bo and Lauren’s relationship evolve, even with its own speed bumps from the episode that aired the Monday after the conference call, “Fae-ge Against the Machine,” we know this to be mostly true. That while Lauren can handle, with relative ease, Bo and Dyson continuing their friendship, Dyson is in the off-limits category. There’s too much history. Yet, Lauren still grudgingly admires and respects him as she moves forward with Bo. This is especially important since Bo will continue to do things – fae things – that Lauren can’t entirely be a part of. And, because we are watching the group separate to do things that are necessary for the characters to grow, Anna commented: “We definitely kind of go our separate ways, you know, with good reason. There’s a lot of stuff for us all to explore, so – but I really can’t say anything about whether or not the gang gets back together.” Oh, tantalizing season finale hooks!
Kris chimed in, agreeing with Anna, adding “Yeah, I totally agree with [Anna]. I love that camaraderie we had [in] season one and I think for all of our characters to grow we had to break apart and have issues and things that drew us away. It’s back to the group and the group dynamic is pretty pivotal to the last few episodes and how we end season three and start season four so you’re just going to have to watch and see.” A show of hands for everyone that’s on board!
A quarter of the way through the call, an energetic Ksenia Solo joined her costars. Ksenia confirmed Kenzi has been shaken by recent events. “I feel like she’s greatly affected and in the big scheme of things, now more than, ever she feels weaker than all her friends who have powers and are, in a physical sense, light years more advanced than she is. Obviously everything affects us whether we know it or not, consciously or subconsciously. But I feel like it is going to affect the decision she makes in [an] upcoming episode.”
When asked about Kenzi’s and Bo’s relationship and what we would see of the duo’s friendship for the rest of the season, Ksenia replied, “It’s been a roller coaster of a journey for both Bo and Kenzi and they’ve kind of had time this season to be apart and go through their own kind of life and death situations and you know, no matter what pulls them apart in the moment, in the long run it’s impossible to tear them apart because of the bond they have and the love they have for each other. Every relationship goes through its ups and downs and they’ve been kind of on the upswing for a while so I think it was time this season to give them some hardships to go through… they’ll be able to move on to the next chapter in their relationship.”
The hardships have been fierce.
What that moving forward will entail after Kenzi’s rescue from the Kitsune (not to mention her obvious reluctance to discuss it) and Bo’s trials as her Dawning comes upon her, will play into the relationship dynamic of the best friends. Anna agrees, “Friendships really have to evolve, they have to be challenged, so I think it’s good for Bo and Kenzi to kind of shake things up in terms of their friendship and see where it goes from where we leave off.”
In terms of character friendships and how the cast and relationships of Lost Girl continue to move people as positive sexual role models to viewers, Ksenia replied with “That’s so cool!” Anna’s sincere perspective on the matter: “I think it’s important, and it’s groundbreaking, frankly, and it definitely feels good to know that we are part of something. That was something we were really conscious of from the very beginning, presenting that. But we didn’t want to over-present it either, we just wanted to make it really truthful. The fact that it’s resonating with people means a lot to us. Zoie [Palmer] and I have talked about it a lot, so have Kris and I, it’s really great.”
Kris added, “A lot of people have made this sort of comment about the chemistry that we have on the set and just among the people who are working on it. And I think that’s part of this thing that sort of radiates through is that we’re all individuals who love each other and it’s not dependent on sexuality or where we’re at. I think we brought that to our characters and how they function together. So I mean that’s very touching to me that people are picking up on that and that it’s adding value out there in this crazy world of TV.”
And in Lost Girl, where there’s love, there’s also often a bit of hate. Tamsin, portrayed by Rachel Skarsten, season three’s new addition to the gang, albeit a recalcitrant one, has some very negative Bo feelings. There’s also a very large Tamsin back story if the latest episode, “Fae-ge Against the Machine,” is any evidence. Anna points out, “For Bo, Tamsin comes in, rocks her world a little bit in the beginning. There’s definitely a lot of electricity between them, good and bad, but more bad in the beginning.” Just like Tamsin’s unwillingness to help Bo – but perhaps knowing she needed to – in “The Kenzi Scale.” Anna continues, “There are certain points in the season where Bo needs Tamsin as much as she might not want to admit that. But I don’t think she can ever fully trust her, not yet anyway, so there’s been a lot to play with in that relationship which I really enjoyed as well.” It would also seem that Tamsin wants more true friend-based relationships than she’s letting on.
The transformation awaiting Bo, Dyson’s feelings, Lauren’s new friend, Kenzie’s ordeals, and Tamsin’s relationship with the Morrigan are all providing intense character development moments. Trick’s (Richard Howland) unexplained history with Dyson, plus his emerging relationship with Stella is causing a bit of a stir for everyone’s favorite faecyclopedia. Unfortunately, Kris states, it won’t be talked about in season three, “But we’ve all been talking about it and it’s definitely something that we all want to tackle and I know the writers are key on bringing something about that into season four.”
As for the current acting Ash, Hale, who placed the Dark valkyrie Tamsin with the Light wolf-shifter Dyson as a way to bridge the growing tension between the two sides? With K. C. Collin‘s somewhat conflicting schedules for Lost Girl and Saving Hope, the writers have deluged Hale with the Ash’s crushing responsibilities. Kris hastens to firmly add that “It all had to do with shooting schedules, Hale wasn’t supposed to become a diminished character… he’s there with us all the way to the end. I think the writers made the most out of what they could do.” Anna, agreeing, points out, “And I think [being] Ash kind of automatically puts him separate than us because he’s got this new responsibility, it works really well.” Though Hale fans would definitely like to see more we agree as it’s crystal clear the Ash has his hands full, especially with the one unaligned fae about to go through her Dawning two hundred years early.
As Bo meets her biggest challenge yet in Lost Girl‘s next episode, “The Ceremony,” Bo will be tested in ways she, and us viewers, can’t even have imagined. It was difficult enough for her to confront her mother in “There’s Bo Place Like Home,” an episode Anna says was the most challenging episode. “When I approach scenes like that the challenge is to really not over-prepare and then the challenge is to trust yourself, that the moments are going to be there.” That proved to work perfectly as viewers were in tears. And now, with our hearts in our throats, we continue to watch as Bo approaches the temple and faces the trials that await.
Episodes of Lost Girl air Monday nights on Syfy and viewer discretion is highly advised. But watch it, it’s great supernatural, sexy TV.
