In the fourth issue of Spell on Wheels, the trio are still on the trail of their stolen goods, having tracked down some of the magical items to their buyers. They’ve come to a remote cabin in the woods of Maryland hoping to recover the items that would aid in the casting of a dangerous spell.

Instead, Jolene, Andy, and Claire meet Paul, another magic user who happens to also be Claire’s “favorite monster”, a goat-man who has inspired several urban legends. Paul reveals that the reason the coven has not been able to locate the perpetrator is that they’ve all been put under a spell.

Writer Kate Leth builds up to this reveal nicely, with the last two issues being a little more case-of-the-week with hints to the Big Bad dropped here and there, and this one focusing more on the main conflict between the witches and their opponents. Artist Megan Levens and colorist Marissa Louise continue to bring a distinct and expressive look to the series. Our three heroines are not only unique in personality but have signature styles that are reflected in every outfit and hair change through every issue.

I also very much enjoy that Claire acknowledges that the Beast was more attractive before he turned into a prince. #NoJudgement

Spell on Wheels has been described “Supernatural meets Buffy and The Craft”, with Leth’s signature snark and Levens and Louise’s gorgeous illustrations ensuring that this is no paranormal pop culture clone. If you haven’t jumped into Spell on Wheels yet, this is a good time to catch up – the series concludes next issue!
