BOOMBOX_Lumberjanes_017_A_MainLumberjanes, the brilliant comic from Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson, Shannon Watters, and Brooke Allen, is pretty well-loved here at Nerdspan. We’ve covered it more than once, and found its story of young adventurers at a supernatural girls’ summer camp to be pretty consistently delightful. There’s a lot to love – a wry, modern sense of humor, mysteries that manage to be both eerie and appropriate for all ages, and a team of confident, capable girls who work together to make awesome things happen. All of these things make it  pretty exciting to hear that Lumberjanes has been optioned for a live-action adaptation with 20th Century Fox.

Will Widger has been hired to write the adaptation. Widger’s screenplay for The Munchkin was on last year’s prestigious Black List – an annual round-up of the best screenplays that didn’t get filmed. (A Black List screenwriter attached to a project is usually a great sign, though some people are raising eyebrows at the prospect of having a white guy scripting an adaptation of one of brightest beacons for feminism and diversity in the comics industry.)

A team of BOOM! Studios executives are set to produce, with a couple of Fox representatives providing oversight. It’s worth noting that we’re a long, long way from this thing actually hitting theaters, but if it does, and if it’s half as great as the book, we’re in for an absolute treat.
