Invader Zim makes his triumphant return in comic form with a dastardly plan and piss-poor invading skills. Where has he been since the show went off the air?

Sitting in a toilet waiting for Dib to get fat and gross, apparently. Invader Zim #1 Page 4

Yes, it turns out that Zim’s evil plot involves eliminating the only human who suspects he might not be from this planet- well, the only human that cares, anyway.

For those who missed the cultish craze surrounding the Invader Zim cartoon, a character named Recap Kid gives a brief introduction to our main players: Zim, an overzealous scout from a distant planet, currently undercover on Earth; Dib, a neighborhood boy who knows Zim’s true identity; and Gaz, Dib’s sister who also knows Zim is an alien, but doesn’t care at all.

This recap is extremely helpful to set up this first issue, which makes some references to the show, and successfully achieves the same feel and sense of humor. This is probably due in part to show creator Jhonen Vasquez’s involvement as writer; his vision makes the transition between mediums smoother and more enjoyable.

Backing Vasquez up is an incredible art team: Aaron Alexovich (pencils), Megan Lawton (inks), and Simon “Hutt” Troussellier (colors). The three of them bring the familiar style of Zim’s animation back to life with energetic, action-packed pages. Their dynamic style keeps the pacing fast and light without detracting from the melodrama of Zim and Dib’s rivalry.

Overall, Invader Zim #1 is a fun read. It may have more appeal for fans of the TV show for now, but it shows some promise as a hilarious sci-fi adventure.
