Ripped off. Bamboozled. Hoodwinked.
Those words perfectly sum up how I feel after reading issue 1 of Death of Hawkman, new from DC Comics this week. For a life-long Hawkman fan, this issue was a slap in the face. The titular character appeared in 10 panels in a 20-page book.
Ten. Measly. Panels.
The actual star of the book is another favourite of mine, Adam Strange. Unfortunately, the story presented to us by the normally terrific creators Marc Andreyko and Aaron Lopresti, is redundant and a colossal waste of time.
The issue read like a silver-age Adam Strange story: Adam is stranded on Earth, waiting for the Zeta Beam to take him back to Rann. Sardath tells his daughter, and Adam’s wife, Alanna, not to worry. Renegade Thanagarians show up and cause havoc. It was a case of been there, read that and read it done better.
I have no idea what DC’s endgame is with this series, apart from threatening to kill off a classic Gardner Fox creation for no good reason. After reading the first issue, I have zero interest in reading what happens next.
My recommendation: avoid this book at all costs.
