Good news for fans of Warhammer 40,000. Dawn of War #1 (of 4) is released on 17 May 2017. The battle continues, and it’s not just between the Space Marines, Eldar and Orks. Sergeant Olivarr volunteers to find missing Chapter Master Gabriel Angelos who has not returned from his latest mission. Olivarr is relatively inexperienced so the older Tarkus joins him. Tarkus has a great deal of admiration for Angelos which is the reason he gives for volunteering. Olivarr claims he was just following orders, but Tarkus points out he volunteered too…

It’s one of those stories where the silences almost say more than the words Olivarr is told he lacks experience, Olivarr says nothing. Later on that page Tarkus says he can help with tracking Angelos. His offer is accepted, and now Tarkus says nothing. There’s respect between the two, but don’t expect them to start talking about it anytime soon. These silences and unanswered questions hint at something to come. There’s also a nice reworking of the classic joke of are they things small or are they far away. The small moments of humour are enough to keep it from getting too dark and depressing.

The art is the perfect example of a space marine world, featuring hard-faced men with shoulders so broad they’d make Judge Dredd feel small (as if he’d ever feel small). Space war landscapes can tend to be a little dull and grey but by featuring plenty of long shots, close-up battles and dramatic lighting it has an almost colourful feel. It’s from Titan Comics and they always provide a generous number of preview pages for you to see if you think you’ll like it, and I think a lot of you will.

INFO
The grim future of Warhammer 40,000 has waged its away across tabletop games, video games, books, and more. But now one of its most beloved iterations is coming to comics in the form of a new miniseries based on the classic RTS video game series Dawn of War.

Set during the events of the upcoming third game in the real-time strategy video game series, which sees the Space Marines, Eldar, and Orks battle over a newly discovered superweapon, Titan’s Dawn of War series—from Ryan O’Sullivan, Daniel Indro, and Kevin Enhart—will follow two Space Marine Sergeants as they journey to find one of their own: missing chapter master of the Blood Ravens, Gabriel Angelos, a major player in the events of the first two games.
