Danger Room arrived with such an incredible assortment of goodies for mutant maniacs that a Google-powered Cerebro would have a hard time bringing this all together in one box. X-Fandom takes the field in this baseball-themed, X-Men-celebrating collection , including not only your mutie school colors, a ballcap to protect an evil mutant from psychic attacks (and you from UV radiation), the power of hydration, and more socks to show your X-Men nerd supremacy.

In keeping with the baseball theme, Danger Room’s insert took the creative form of trading cards, and the box interior resembles a gym locker.

While I feel that the X-Men have been oversold to pop culture for most of my adult life, compared to some of Marvel’s other excelent concepts, I can get behind angsty muties with the best of them, and have always had a fondness for the original 1963 set as created by Lee & Kirby. Consequently, my favorite item in Danger Rooom was the exclusive X-Men baseball tee that pays homage, not only with its two color design, but the 63 under the stylized logo and on the reverse, to the uniformed original X-Men. Moreover, it feels like authentic athletic wear, with its light, breathable polyester. (I know that you’re waiting for me to use “fastball special” in reference to this baseball-themed X-Men collection, but it has to be organic, so maybe I’ll squeeze it in somewhere else…). I will wear the heck out of this shirt.

My second favorite item in Danger Room was the exclusive Magneto baseball hat, mainly because I’m thrilled that it seems a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch bigger than novelty ballcaps sold in box stores. While my oversized noggin can’t squeeze into any other comic book hat that isn’t a toboggan, I now have a Magneto cap that fits nicely. In addition to that, it’s an admirable hat,, with clever line art under the bill that makes use of the red stitching as action lines to emphasize the portrayal of Magneto’s explosion. The embroidery is nice as well–although I first thought Cut Man when I saw this, not Magneto, I would have been happy to have a Cut-Man hat, too–if it fit.

The Kitty Pryde water bottle looks like it holds around twenty ounces and might insulate a drink for a fair amount of time. The Kitty Pryde art is well-done, so that I wouldn’t think this was any other comic book character but Kitty.

The exclusive Mystique socks are good footwear that definitely suggest the famous X-Men antagonist, antiprotagonist, and ambiprotagonist in their color scheme and iconography. Every now and then Loot Crate gives to its subscribers what may be the first of an item’s kind in the world, and I would think that Mystique socks may have first appeared in this crate, pleasing all those with Mystique sock dreams. Loot Crate also has the most generous color wheel out there, in that you’re certain to get a whole spectrum of wearable fabrics. I’m really digging this shade of blue.

This month’s pin was dedicated to one of my favorite comic books from the eighties, The New Mutants, and also sported an excellent Bill Sienkiewicz cover featuring who was one of my favorite characters in the early issues of The New Mutants: Psyche aka Danielle Moonstar.

Overall, Danger Room was a quality crate, with not only an outstanding jersey to show love for the original X-Men, but a great snapback, a water bottle to keep me from fading away, and a cool pin depicting a great eighties comic book cover.

While Danger Room is no longer available, you can order the Avengers-focused Assemble until May 15th:
