Colossal hulked out from June’s Loot Crate with a fictional theme park t-shirt, a drawstring proton pack, alter egos caught in transition, a kaiju for your shelf, and a dinosaur for your lapel, including goodies from Jurassic Park, Godzilla, Ghostbusters, and The Hulk.

My favorite item in Colossal was the exclusive Jurassic Park t-shirt, due to its quirky graphics depicting characters and scenes in a chibi / kawaii style. If the style seems light for the Colossal theme, it conceals heavy concepts. I’ll break this down here, but if you’re only here for the spoilers, feel free to skip to the next slideshow. Chibi / kawaii imagery are a kind of visual evolution, or more correctly, an appealing devolution created in oversimplifying a figure. So the shirt not only depicts the human and the dinosaur, two creatures separated by a vast timeline of geological epochs, but their penetration into an aesthetic scale, which marks the artist’s and the audience’s visual and conceptual evolution. Moreover, in identifying the subject of the image, you’ve participated in it, which makes this shirt a kind of happening, as if you’ve stepped in to be munched by the caricature. So in a way, this chibi comic strip is the most colossal statement ever made by a Loot Crate shirt.

My second favorite item in Colossal was this month’s exclusive Jurassic Park Dilophosaurus Loot Pin. So stylized that it seems Ghiblified to me, this six color pin exhibits a lot of detail and injects its monstrous little smile into your ensemble.

I also enjoyed the Loot Crate edition of the Godzilla Funny Plush. Not only are plushes cool to get, but this Funny Plush is definitely funny-looking, with a massive Jabberjaw overbite, orc eyes, and a general impression that if I turn my head, he might turn purple and start singing the “I Love You” song.

Also in Colossal was an exclusive Ghostbusters drawstring backpack depicting a representation of a proton pack. While not as cool as other drawstring bags Loot Crate has sent out in its subscriptions, it obviously has some cosplay value, and on Halloween it could double as not only a costume accessory but a treat bag.

The Loot Crate edition of Open Road’s Hulk lenticular print is an attractive mini-poster on hard glossy card stock that pictures both The Hulk and his alter ego, Brruce Banner depending on which angle you take on the lenticular.

Overall, Colossal was a good crate, with an excellent shirt, an attractive pin, and a little kaiju minion for my shelf. While Colossal is no longer available, until July 19th, you can order Team-Up, which includes goodies from Ant-Man and the Wasp, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
