If you’re on Twitter, you probably know Rachel Richey as one of the three souls displaced by Arthur Suydam’s monster made of convention tables this year at Montreal Comiccon, but currently the Toronto based comics historian has turned to Canada’s monster-fighter, Mr. Monster, and you can be part of this Kickstarter by following this link. With 23 days to go and the Kickstarter mostly funded, the questions now are what stretch goals will be unlocked and which backers are going to snipe the last remaining original art pledges, as many of those big levels are already taken.
Official press release:
Doc Stearne is…Mr. Monster!
Canada’s darkest superhero returns, crowdfunded through Kickstarter
Toronto, ON – Toronto-based comic book historian Rachel Richey, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to reprint the original Doc Stearne/Mr. Monster comics in their entirety. The campaign began September 1st, 2015 and concludes on October 1st, 2015. It has been successful so far raising 12.5k on the first day.
During WWII, the Canadian government banned the import of US made luxury goods. Bereft of Superman and Batman comic books, Canadian publishers rushed to fill the void, creating hundreds of original comic book characters. Around 1943, Fred Kelly created Doctor Jim Stearne, a normal medical doctor who finds himself pulled into a series of fantastic adventures with Gloria Gale and her father, Professor Edwin Gale. Throughout these adventures, Stearne discovers the power the occult has and vows to rid the world of evil. This is when he becomes Mr. Monster, a monster-fighting superhero.
In the early 1980s, Michael T Gilbert derived his own series about Mr. Monster, so inspired was he by the original. He even attracted the attention of guest writers like Alan Moore and William Messner-Loebs.
The campaign is supported by the contributions of internationally-renowned artists including:
- Francis Manapul (Witchblade, The Flash)
- J. Bone (Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Super Friends)
- Kalman Andrasofszky (Captain Canuck, X-23)
- Ryan Stegman (Spiderman, She Hulk)
- Marcus To (Red Robin, New Warriors)
- Scott Chantler (Two Generals)
- Many more!
The book will also include a foreword by Eisner winner Ramon Perez and an essay by Michael T Gilbert.
Mr. Monster will be reprinted with the permission of the copyright holders, Corus Entertainment and the National Archives of Canada.
