Mark Millar has done it again.
The Scottish superscribe has hit another one of of the proverbial park with his latest release Starlight, which hits stores March 5th from Image Comics. The hero of the debut book in the new Millarworld line is Duke McQueen, a legendary space hero whose adventures may or may not have actually happened. According to McQueen, he saved the universe from certain destruction three and a half decades ago, but there’s zero evidence of that actually happening. After arriving back on Earth, McQueen marries Joanne, the love of his life, settles down and leaves the adventuring behind him. However, the life he left behind doesn’t stay left behind forever.
Millar spends the first issue jumping back and forth between the present, at the time of a great loss in McQueen’s life, and the past, where we see him in action. From this issue, it appears Millar drew his inspiration from Errol Flynn, Buck Rodgers, Mr. Incredible and William Munny, Clint Eastwood’s character in the classic film Unforgiven. The final few pages of the book shake McQueen’s life to the core, and leaves readers wanting more.
The star of this book is artist Goran Parlov, whose work invokes thoughts of legendary artist Moebius…his off-Earth scenes are absolutely stunning.
Starlight #1 is a great read and perfect debut issue for what is sure to be another winner from Millar.
