Comic Review: Pokémon The Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened
Fan-favorite Mewtwo is back in Pokémon’s latest story, Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened manga by Momota Inoue from VIZ Media. When a group of ancient Genesect move into an area, they cause a number of problems with the local population. They also attract the attention of Mewtwo, a powerful Pokémon with a past similar to the Genesect.
Like the Pokémon franchise as a whole, heavy themes are explored in a context easy for younger readers to understand. In Genesect and the Legend Awakened, readers witness the effects of human tampering with natural processes. Genesect, an extinct Pokémon, was revived after three hundred million years of extinction. These Genesect are forced into a world they no longer understand, and their confusion has left them aggressive towards humans. Through Mewtwo, readers have the sense that Pokémon altered by humans have no place in the world. Ever the optimist, Ash and Pikachu are determined to find a permanent home for the displaced Genesect.
The artwork is beautiful and complements the story well without being overbearing. Inoue does a fantastic job illustrating the various Pokémon and conveying their emotions in this manga. The manga captures the feel of the television show and movie brilliantly. The action sequences in Genesect and the Legend Awakened are well done, highlighting both the high-stakes nature of the fight while moving the story forward.
Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened manga is a great addition to any Pokémon fan’s collection. Whether they are a long-time fan or new to the franchise, this manga will captivate them from beginning to end.
