Lumberjanes Issue 14 Alternate CoverBack with more outdoor adventures, the fourteenth issue of Lumberjanes pulls a Christmas in July… or more specifically, a snowstorm at the summer camp.

In the midst of a routine wilderness-survival lesson, the Roanoke cabin and scout-leader Jen go from arguing about whether donuts constitute real food to battling beasties while blinded by a blizzard. The Lumberjanes are rescued by camp scout-master Rosie, but Jen takes a tumble in the storm and wakes up in a strange cabin.

After delivering the Lumberjanes safely back to camp, Rosie heads back out to look for Jen. Jo, April, Molly, Mal, and Ripley aren’t far behind- until they realize the survival skills Jen had been going on about really would have come in handy, as they discover they’ve been headed in the wrong direction.

Jen’s rescuer seems friendly, but gives off sinister vibes and seems to be hiding something from her past and far too interested in getting Jen upset at the campers for “leaving her”.

As always, Lumberjanes has a well-balanced mix of the fantastic, the absurd, and the mysterious. The dialogue is everything Diablo Cody ever wanted for her teen characters but actually sounds like things kids actually say. The strangeness surrounding the camp, the woods, and all the creatures is revealed bit by bit, keeping readers itching for the next installment. The return of the bear-woman bodes well for readers wanting to know more about the camp’s history and more about the enigmatic Rosie.

SUDDENLY WINTER HAPPENS

The introduction of a new potential adversary is intriguing now that the first true story arc is complete.  However, some might find this character’s tendency of saying “sweetie” and “darling” every other sentence a little grating… although that could be reading some tone into it that was not intentional.

Fans of the series will be delighted with this new installment in the Lumberjanes’ saga, and this is a great place for new readers to jump in. Stevenson and her team have yet to disappoint!
