Ghostbusters fever is sweeping the nation, although it has a reactionary current quite unlike the hip, anti-authoritarian tone of the original 1984 Ghostbusters movie, as there are apparently millions of loud fans that would prefer to be Gatekeepers rather than Venkmans. Still, there is enough unmitigated enthusiasm for the 2016 update that fans are showing their love, including the Lego enthusiasts at Brick Loot, who created a “Ghost Hunters” themed box for this July.
This is the first Brick Loot that we’ve received at NerdSpan, and I’m pretty pleased with the contents. Subscription box buyers should take note that this box is put together by brick enthusiasts, and the subscription service is not an arm of Lego or K’nex, or any of the other building block companies.
The first item, the PKE Meter, is an exclusive build designed by Kyle Peterson, the owner of BrickForge Miniature Accessories. If you’re a parent, you could break the bank buying an authentic prop replica of a PKE Meter online, but your kids will also be happy to have this one, because not only will they have the fun of having it, they’ll have the fun of building it. It was the item that my eleven year old begged me to open when I got the Brick Loot, and as she started putting it together almost as soon as I snapped the pictures for this review, I have both before and after pics for this one.
Next is the ninja-inspired Ghost Hunter which is described as a Custom 100% LEGO Minifigure from United Bricks. This guy isn’t taking any chances with getting slimed, as only his eyes and hands are exposed to the always-present threat of ectoplasm when ghostbusting.
Wow! Um, while I’ve been writing this review, it looks like my daughter opened two more, including this Ghost Trap Light from Liteupblock. I would have loved to have light-up bricks when I was building LEGOs as a kid, and the possibilities for integrating this piece into other LEGO sets are many.
Here’s the Ghost Treats Machine, designed by Bricklover18, who describes himself in the accompanying literature as a “teenage fan of LEGO who loves building LEGO creations and creating LEGO YouTube videos!” The Ghost Treats Machine is a good model and a unique concept for those that want to have their ghosts and their ghost hunters on good terms.
Also included was a Barrel-O-Slime and a sample pack of Plus Plus building toys. Plus Plus are not really bricks, but as building toys they will fascinate Brick Loot fans. It is an extremely small sample though, which will restrict ambitious builds with this one. As to the Barrel-O-Slime, it isn’t a building toy at all, but just what it says, slime in a can, to fit with the Ghostbusters theme. One day they may invent non-solid Lego bricks, but in the meantime this real slime will have to hold the place for the Lego slime.
Overall, this was a cool assortment of Lego content that Lego enthusiasts will enjoy. Brick Loot’s August theme, Architecture Around the World, is available for ordering now.
