Superman joins Supergirl in the first two episodes of Season 2, Warner Bros. TV have officially announced. There are no details about what Superman will be doing yet other than the unsurprising news that he will be visiting his cousin Kara in National City. A Kryptonian pod crashed on earth at the end of the first season, so that might have something to do with Superman’s appearance on the show.
Superman is often mentioned in Supergirl, but other than fleeting appearances he’s yet to be seen up close and talking. With the Superman movie franchise currently active, most people had believed Superman would never really join Supergirl. With casting underway, we don’t yet know who will be playing Superman but it’s been said that the actor will be playing a different version from Henry Cavill or Christopher Reeve. He’ll be his own Superman relevant to the world of Supergirl. More of that to come later…
In a statement, Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg said “Greg [Berlanti], Ali [Adler] and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”
What about Tom Welling?
If you feel like indulging in some pure speculation, a few news outlets have suggested the star of Smallville Tom Welling could be reprising his role. This could make some sense if you look at some of the other actors cast in Supergirl. The show hired former Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star, Dean Cain, film Supergirl Helen Slater and Smallville Supergirl Laura Vandervoort. It’s got to be possible that Tom Welling may make an appearance at some point. If he does join Supergirl, will he be Superman?
