Shadow of the Colossus collects Mickey Mouse comics not only from recent years, but as far back as the 1950s and even one from 1935! This collection includes work from Noel Van Horn, Romano Scarpa, Bill Walsh, and more.
The titular storyline comes from the Italian team of semi-regular writer for the series, Andrea “Casty” Castellan and artist Giorgio Cavazzano. The simple color palette and “rubbery” character movements that make the illustrations seem more connected to their animated beginnings blend perfectly with the older comics in style and substance. Even with the sci-fi/Indiana Jones style plot, the story feels timeless as well as engaging for readers.
My particular favorite is a story called “No Good Deed…” that focuses on Pete and a strange kid bent on teaching him to help others mid-heist. It’s not overly cutesy and packs plenty of action into each panel. Another more recent release, writer Lars Jensen and artist Marco Rota create a story that feels like it would easily have found success with the 1950s crowd.
The collection is a fun read for adults that might have been fans in their youth, but this seems to be something best enjoyed by sharing with younger readers.
