DC Comics is retelling Wonder Woman’s origin. Again.
The publisher launched a new digital-first series, The Legend of Wonder Woman, this week, giving new readers a perfect entry point to learning about everyone’s favourite Amazon. It’s a perfect jumping on point for anyone wanting to get ahead of the expected wave of popularity the character is expected to enjoy with her big screen debut in a few months in the film Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Older readers won’t learn anything they didn’t already know, as writer/artist Renae De Liz didn’t break any new ground with the debut issue. We don’t actually see Diana until the book’s quarter mark, with the focus instead on her mother Hippolyta and her desire to have a child.
A good chunk of the issue is spent showing Diana struggling to fit in with the other children on the island and her increasing desire to learn how to fight, both to Hippolyta’s chagrin. Diana would rather be less like the others and more like the fierce warrior, Alcippe.
Diana’s curiosity gets the best of her and she explores the island, landing herself in trouble. From there, her story gets more interesting…much more interesting.
I can’t say as a long-time fan of the character that this is the best version of Wonder Woman I’ve ever read, but it’s a solid take and is perfect for anyone wanting to learn more about one of DC’s trinity.
I give Legend of Wonder Woman #1 seven out of 10.
