Loot Anime November 2018: Search (Review)
Beginning with the anime word search on the Loot Anime box interior, Search’s theme concerned those anime heroes and plots that decode or penetrate mysteries in a multilayered narrative, not only a rag infused with the spirit of death, a lanyard for passing into ghoul subculture, a mug for exorcising the morning blues, and two shirts featuring popular anime questers.
As Hunter X Hunter is among my favorite anime, however much I must forgive it the overlong and grueling Formorian Ant arc, this Gon Freecs t-shirt was my favorite item in Search. Without doubt my favorite HxH character, Gon is a duochrome green and white image on a green background that suggests the black and white panels of the manga as much as the popular anime.
Mob Psycho 100 is perhaps my favorite anime to date, and the Mob Psycho 100 mug was my second favorite item in Search, mainly due to the selected franchise. With the series logo on one side, and hero shots of Reigen and Mob on the other, this mug is a nice inclusion for fans of the series.
I love lanyards, and the Funimation Tokyo Ghoul “I Am A Ghoul” lanyard is a pretty sweet inclusion, with art depicting Ken Kaneki on the strap, and Ken’s mask as a charm on the badge holder.
After Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets (which I have thankfully come to know better as Science Ninja Team Gatchaman), and Starblazers, the original Voltron series was my fourth encounter with anime as a boy, and while I haven’t made time to watch the Netflix series, I have distant memories of excitement and enthusiasm relating to watching the original. Search’s Voltron: Legendary Defender shirt uses to great effect a purple monochrome mech gazing at Voltron‘s five lions arrayed in a rainbow burst.
While Light is a psychopathic antihero that elicits less empathy than the detective antagonists, Death Note‘s Ryuk is a loveable troll of the spirit world who delights more in mischief and schadenfreude than in fulfilling his lethal calling. And here he is on a giant bandana that would double as great wall art in a non-standard diamond shape.
Overall, Search was a great installment of the Loot Anime subscriptiion, including two items that will receive lots of love here, the Gon Freecs shirt and the Reigen and Mob mug, as well as other delightful inclusions. While Fearless is no longer available, until January 27th, you can order Dangerous, which includes goodies from Boruto, Sword Art Online, RWBY, and Alita: Battle Angel.
