The twentieth installment of Loot Anime, Action Comedy, has arrived, with two scenes from popular anime, miniature heroes from City Z, the first volume of an otaku’s afterlife adventures in a RPG-styled setting, and a shirt illustrated not just with one hero, but a whole character gallery.
Though shockingly white shirts aren’t always safe around me due to my liking for saucy food, my favorite item this month is the exclusive Trigun: Badlands Rumble tee, which crams a ton of the film’s characters in the featured art. This luminous white shirt will grab attention, but the intricate image will hold it, because there are a lot of curves, lines, and expressions here for the eye to navigate. The cotton stock is a little heavier than the last few Loot Anime shirts, which will be good to have in the cooler months that are coming.
My second favorite inclusion is this month’s exclusive variant manga from Yen Press: Konosuba: Gods’ Blessing On This Wonderful World Volume 1 Konosuba is a funny comedy set in the fantasy/RPG genre, though it’s also got a little bit of afterlife science fiction to it as well, as the manga begins after its protagonist Kazuma Sato has already died. After a Goddess mocks him for the humiliating way that he died (shades of The Good Place), she sends him to a fantasy world which is in need of heroes, but not before offering to him his choice of any one plenipotent item. While he could have picked something that would have made him the Mary Sue of this new world, such as Mjolnir, a superpower, a Tardis, a 100 foot money bin, or a 100,000 horsepower robot body, he instead picks the Goddess herself. Hence, much of the comedy of Konosuba comes from the combination of the Odd Couple dynamic of an otaku combined with a goddess who is his superior in nearly every way, as well as the “fish out of water” angle of characters displaced from their realities. It’s an excellent choice for the Action Comedy crate, as if you discover that you’re a fan, there are already several volumes out of this series in both manga and light novel form. This variant edition has an exclusive cover with a reflective background, as well as the contents of the regular edition, such as color frontispiece pages and a short prose story in the inside front and back covers.
FLCL fans–already high from the news that, after years of silence since the acclaimed first season, not one, but two, new seasons will drop in 2018–were no doubt pleased to have this exclusive FLCL print from Funimation. This was one of two Funimation prints included in Action Comedy; the second print was from High School DxD.
Action Comedy also included one of four different metallic variants of the One-Punch Man Original Minis. The back of the box, included in the gallery above, reveals all four sets: in addition to the Saitama in two poses set that we received, two sets included Genos and Saitama, and one included Lord Boros and Saitama. Unlike the One-Punch Man Original Minis that you may have seen in stores, these have a metallic sheen to them. And the good news, whether you really wanted Lord Boros, or wanted to complete a set of One-Punch Man Original Minis, is that Loot Vault will have a limited number available sometime in August.
The Action Comedy phone charm depicts Yume’s pet Kitty, and unlike the other phone charms, which were hard plastic, this one is vinyl. And, this month’s poster by Hans Tseng depicts Yume and Kitty in the aftermath of a ramen accident. It’s not only well-drawn, but also a funny image.
