Penny Dreadful #2   In the last issue of Penny Dreadful, Vanessa, Sir Malcolm and Sembene met with Jonathan Harker to gain some insight into Mina’s disappearance. Things didn’t go smoothly, and the group narrowly escaped a brutal attack. As we move into Penny Dreadful #2, they take shelter in a church as Vanessa tries to put together the events that took away her friend. Without giving too much away, the end of Penny Dreadful #2 suggests we’re moving to a new location and I’m excited to see how that looks in the intriguing colour style.

The art style of Penny Dreadful #2 continues with the Louie de Martinis look you would expect. The dark world of vampires is presented in a low-colour way. A lot of blue, black and purple fills the pages, occasionally given to sudden large splashes of red when a vampire is seen. The style explodes off the pages so strongly you can almost hear the dramatic music. It also features some very cool scratching effects and symbols mixing in, around and through the panels. It’s as if the comic has been around hundreds of years and has a few stories to tell. I like it a lot.

Krysty Wilson-Cairns’ story continues with some strong emotion, excitement and danger as the difficult group continues their search for Mina. It reads as if something is going to get them at any moment. Either a vampire will attack or they will implode and take each other out.

Penny Dreadful #2

Penny Dreadful #2 ends with an interesting piece taken from The Art of Making Penny Dreadful (Sharon Gosling, Titan Books) about the design of their version of a TV vampire. They knew they didn’t want CGI monsters but struggled to find the right actor to play one with the right movement, face and body type. After seeing a long string of actors they finally picked someone who didn’t have an agent, which is rare in the world of acting.
