Warhammer 40,000 #1 is the first of a four part series from the pen of George Mann with art from Tazio Bettin. The violent storms that have protected the Calaphrax Cluster for a thousand years have receded, opening an ancient battlefront in the war against Chaos. Space Marine Baltus is loyal and devoted and hopes the Calaphrax campaign will give him a chance to advance into the inner circle of his Chapter. Interrogator-Chaplain Altheous faces the ultimate test of keeping all the secrets he’s seen buried from the universe. Inquisitor Sabbathiel is on a mission to root out heresy and Chaos wherever they are found, with often questionable methods. It wouldn’t be Warhammer if the names were easy to spell, right?

It’s a George Mann comic so the story is as well told as you would expect – it’s the classic first comic setup of a few characters with interweaving story lines. After some initial plotting in stony corridors we’re soon into planet invading action. The art from Tazio Bettin is perfect for Warhammer. It’s futuristic, it’s retro, it’s colourful, it’s sparse, it’s dark – should we say grimdark? Most importantly, everyone has a massive body with a relatively tiny head and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Just look at the preview pages.

Warhammer 40,000 #1 is the first of four in the series so things are going to progress quickly over the next couple of months. I’m interested to see where it leads.
