Internet celebrity Grumpy Cat makes a comic book appearance in Dynamite’s The Misadventures of Grumpy Cat (and Pokey!) number 1. Tardar Sauce, better known as Grumpy Cat, and her brother Pokey feature in four separate adventures featuring art from Steve Uy, Michelle Nguyen and Ken Haeser with writing by Ben McCool, Ben Fisher, Royal McGraw and Elliot Serrano.
“Treasure Map” sees the enthusiastic but gullible Pokey convincing Grumpy Cat to accompany him on a treasure hunt to a house that may be haunted, but Grumpy might know more than she’s letting on. “Grumpy in HD” attempts to solve the mystery of how to turn on the ‘tee-vee’ after careful study of the humans. “Paws of Justice” sees the pair fighting crime as their alter egos Super-Pokey and Grumpy Cat (“Wait, my superhero name is just my regular name?”) with some relatively dark artwork from Ken Haeser. “Grumpy Cat goes to Comic-Con” (“It’s called a Comic Convention, or the end of humanity, for short”) leads on to 24 thumbnail images of alternative covers. Grumpy Cat loves variant comics as it gives her more boxes to dump out and make a mess.
As you might expect with Grumpy Cat, the storylines straddle the areas of light humour for adults and children, with world-weary dismissive one-liners on hand to dampen Pokey’s enthusiasm. Even though the comic is drawn by three separate artists it retains a consistent feel despite the change in style. Speaking of artwork, it’s all of a high quality and where appropriate the artists go out of their way to produce some detailed drawings. The Misadventures of Grumpy Cat could be very popular with her millions of fans.
