Star Trek is one of those beloved properties with a fan-base so dedicated that anything that remotely alters something will be deemed blasphemous. When it was announced that J.J. Abrams was doing a new Star Trek film, there were many fans waiting to tear it apart. Of course, we know how that turned out. The new film was fun and reinvigorated the property to the point where there were comics based on the new film franchise and sequels. This review is for the first issue of IDW’s new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy #1.
This series is based on the new Star Trek film series and takes place during Kirk’s time at Starfleet Academy and after. Of course, Kirk’s Starfleet Academy timeframe includes Spock, Uhura, Chekov, and others who are sure to make an appearance in future issues. The after timeframe story takes place after the events of the first film and involves a Vulcan named T’Laan and so far shows her issues while attending Starfleet Academy. For example, during a meet & greet for the “Inter-Academy Exploratory Competition”, she gets rudely snubbed by the visiting Vulcan team, as only a Vulcan can. Writers Mike Johnson & Ryan Parrott do an excellent job of giving us two different stories, which must connect somehow, that definitely expands the backstories of the Enterprise crew and the film universe which J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek has created. The art by Derek Charm definitely puts you into the world established by the film and makes me hope to see some of these aliens in future films. I recommend this book for anyone, but definitely recommend this book for Stark Trek fans.
