Review: Shadowman #5

Writers Justin Jordan and Patrick Zircher and artists Patrick Zircher, Lee Garbett, Stefano Gaudiano, and Roberto Delatorre start the new arc of Shadowman with the return of a old Valiant character and a very sinister deal.

Shadowman #5
Jack Boniface is the new Shadowman, and there are people out to get him. After an initial encounter with The Brethren, he’s been sent into hiding by the Abettors. On his first trip outside the safehouse, Jack gets into a bit of trouble and his favorite waitress dies. At the same time, Master Darque is making the most of his time on the Deadside as he attempts to make a deal with Baron Samedi, the voodoo god of the dead.

Jordan and Zircher write both an action-packed issue and one with a very sinister ending. The dialogue is great for the action and drama of the story, but also for the small hints of humor, like the demon chimp calling a necromancer “hoss”. The deal that Darque proposes to Samedi doesn’t bode well for Shadowman, but bodes well for the conflict and plot for the series.

The art by the varied artists shows storylines both in the mortal realm and the Deadside. The story in the mortal world features fairly standard comic art, but the art of the Deadside is fantastic. It fits well with the idea of a realm inhabited by spirits and voodoo gods as it’s dark, dreary, and a bit muted.
Overall, it’s a great issue. As the start of a new arc, it gives some background information for supposed new readers, but keeps the story moving along well. Another fine issue in a fine series.
