With the pandemic dragging on, it’s looking less likely that audiences will be back in theatres or venues in great numbers anytime soon, so many are finding new ways to deliver their shows. One such endeavour is a live online rehearsed reading of Harold Pinter’s The Dwarfs, adapted by Kerry Lee Crabbe, which is being presented via Zoom by Run At It Shouting. What makes this all the more worthwhile is that it is in aid of NIA, the domestic violence charity.
Although well known as a playwright, Harold Pinter wrote his only novel, The Dwarfs in the early 1950s, before adapting it himself for a stage run in London’s West End in the 1960s. After it was finally published in 1992, Kerry Lee Crabbe persuaded Pinter to collaborate on a new version, which was shown on BBC Four in 2002, before its stage debut in 2003.
Set in Postwar Britain, it centres on four characters struggling under the weight of austerity in the Hackney area of London, with the transition into adult life creating tension between them. This semi-autobiographical piece is comparatively less well known than many of Pinter’s other works, and lays the seeds for some of his later material.
In this production, the cast includes Stacy Martin (Archive, Nymphomaniac – Vol 1, High Rise, All the Money in the World), Charlie MacGechan (We Die Young, Deus, The Girl From The Song), Lewis Rainer (Dracula, A Hologram For The King, The Girl From The Song), and Ossian Perret (The Witcher, Sanctuary, The F1rst Team), all being directed by well-known theatre director, actor and documentary filmmaker Harry Burton (Coming Up, Working With Pinter).
It should be an interesting version of the play, and at the very least will show what can be done during this period of uncertainty, as well as highlighting a rare piece of work by Harold Pinter.
The performance is on at 7pm (UK time), so that will be 2pm (EDT), 1pm (CDT), and 11am (PDT) on Friday 25th September.
