Marvel artist Kirbi Fagan was at October 2016’s London Comic Con as part of The Unbeatables launch. Kirbi was diagnosed with Crohn’s at a young age so the IBD Unmasked project is personal to her. I spoke to Kirbi about the project and her first London Comic Con experience. You can see more of her work here www.kirbifagan.com
IC: I write for NerdSpan. We cover anything cult, comic book or nerdy.
KF: Great, I fit right in.
IC: I’d not heard much about IBD but was surprised how many people have it and how many famous people have it, including you.
KF: It is really surprising. It’s very invisible so it hides, but it’s prevalent so when I found out that Marvel, my company that I work for, was doing this I had to get involved.
IC: When were you diagnosed?
KF: I’ve actually lived my life longer with Crohn’s than I’ve lived without. I was diagnosed as a child. It’s a daily challenge, but this disease has really shaped me, I do think for the better. It’s made me incredibly resilient which is as characteristic that is needed in the arts.
IC: If you could pick anything to raise awareness about, you’d probably pick this one as it’s so personal.
KF: Yes, very. I took special care in painting these characters. It’s really incredible to see someone like me in this comic.
IC: You started in book covers originally, didn’t you?
KF: I still do a ton of book covers, science fiction and fantasy covers, comic book covers. It’s mostly what I do.
IC: What other Marvel covers do you draw?
KF: I’ve done covers for Han Solo and Mockingbird.
IC: Do you ever want to draw the inside too?
KF: *Laughs*.
IC: In a way the cover is the best part as it makes you pick the comic up.
KF: I have to say right now I’m loving doing the covers, I like working in colour and getting my hands messy with oil paint.
IC: I hear you’re doing some painting demonstrations at London Comic Con.s
KF: I’m going to do some painting and sketches. I think I’m going to do one every day at the booth so it’ll be fun. Come and watch me mess up!
IC: Is this your first London Comic Con?
KF: Yes. I’ve never been to London before so this is really neat to be here.
IC: What do you think of it so far?
KF: It’s great! Comic Con is all about the shock factor and I love seeing everybody come out and waving their freak flag. It’s great. I’m really excited to see the difference between the American and European comic scene so I’m hoping to get to know some people I haven’t met before. It’s all about the hero overcoming some big feat, right?
