Fraction and DeConnick ink TV Deal with Universal
So, this is exciting. Apparently comic scribe power-couple Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction have signed a deal with Universal TV to develop several of their creator-owned properties into television series.
In case you don’t know how awesome and fun these two people are, here’s a kaiju party they threw for their five-year-old son where they built a city out of cardboard and had the partygoers trample it while roaring.
In a more professional realm, both are largely known for their Marvel work, but both also have a healthy sideline in creator-owned books, largely through Image.
Fraction is currently getting a lot of love for his Hawkeye book (here’s our review of an issue told entirely from the perspective of Hawkeye’s dog), and he’s also turned in spectacular runs on Iron Man and The Immortal Iron Fist. His creator-owned work includes spy story Casanova, and a gender-bent, sci-fi take on Homer called Ody-C.
But let’s be honest. You’re a pervert, so the reason you love Matt Fraction is Sex Criminals. And why shouldn’t you love Sex Criminals? It’s amazing. His story of two people who realize they can freeze time after doin’ it and decide to rob banks is incredible. The fact that every background is crammed with so many sight-gags that each issue takes like an hour to read is enough reason to love it alone, even if it didn’t manage to somehow imbue its ridiculously raunchy premise with enough tearjerking character moments to make you really root for the bad guys. (Also released in time for Valentine’s Day was a sex guide from Fraction and his Sex Criminals artist, Chip Zdarsky. The book was called Just the Tips, because of course it was, and it’s a great way to talk to your kids about sexuality no please do not do that.) Fraction also has one of the most entertaining blogs on the Internet,
But Fraction is only one half of this amazing power couple. Kelly Sue DeConnick also wields some incredible powers. Her Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel is so amazing that it went largely untouched during the Marvel Now! soft reboot, and when Marvel decided that maybe their legions of fans screaming for a female-led action movie, they went with introducing Captain Marvel, instead of giving the already-introduced, already-bankable Black Widow a solo film.
DeConnick got plenty of got good notice for the creator-owned Pretty Deadly, but her most recent success is Bitch Planet, a sci-fi prison comic that manages to pay homage to the exploitation films of the 70’s while also giving them a feminist send-up. The book is relatively new, but already making MASSIVE waves with its tale of women sent to a prison planet for “non-compliance.” (If I had to guess, I’d say that this is one of the properties up for grabs in the Universal deal.)
Speaking of, Sex Criminals is the first book up for adaptation. Hopefully that means that they’re going to be pitching this to the AMCs and HBOs of the world, because it’s really not the sort of book that would work on, say, ABC.
As for next steps, they’re hoping to use their TV production company (Milkfed Criminal Masterminds) to help bring other creators’ shows to television. And again, bet you anything the next title we hear announced is Bitch Planet.
