As the first season begins to draw to a close, writers Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley welcome artist Tristan “T-Rex” Jones to the book as the new artist. Following a Ghost Hunters or Myth Busters style television show, Hoax Hunters is about Jack, Ken, and Regan, reality television show hosts that seemingly debunk various hoaxes and mysteries, when in reality they’re the ones making sure they stay covered up.

As cryptids, creatures such as Bigfoot who are mythic in nature, but never proven to exist, start appearing in concentrated areas. Feeling that something is up, the Hoax Hunters team gets into action. Only, Donovan, their manager of sorts, want to split up, taking Regan to South America with him. Jack and Ken are uneasy about splitting the team, but Regan agrees to help Donovan hunt the demon he’s after. To make things worse, Murder is behaving quite strangely.

Moreci and Seeley have taken a concept that some would scoff at and made it into a truly engaging story. For readers such as myself who have always been interested in cryptids and the like, it’s fantastic to see those sort of stories in comics. The characters each have rich, troubled pasts that are being revealed slowly to the readers, making the story one that is easy to get lost in and addictive, in a way. The story is evolving, building upon itself, as more mysteries are added even as more is revealed. Plus, with a character like Murder, it’s hard not to love the series.

T-Rex Jones gives the book an entirely new direction with the art. While the previous art was often a bit closer to comic industry norms, Jones has a style that is much looser and more emotive. The jagged and sometimes stray lines give a strange sense of grit and darkness to the pages, which is only fitting since there seems to be a demon or two in this arc. The style makes the story feel more mysterious and suspenseful, which makes the events of this issue even more impacting.

All in all, this issue brought change to the series, and in a very good way.  A big new artistic change sets the tone for what is sure to be an impacting arc in this story. More is revealed of Regan’s past, but it only raises more questions, even as the rest of the team is surely headed towards trouble. The first season is winding down and you don’t want to miss it.
