Set a year after a robot uprising in this world, Alex + Ada follows Alex, a twenty-something with a job he hates, as he celebrates yet another birthday. His life is rather boring after breaking up with his girlfriend seven months ago, but it seems that his grandmother is about to change all that with her birthday present for Alex this year.

Johnathan Luna makes his return to monthly comics with this book, and he’s behind every aspect of this book. Luna only shares story/script duties with Sarah Vaughn. Due to the shared duties, it’s hard to say which person certain parts of the story came from, but this comic has an interesting concept. Androids have progressed to the point where they can rebel, but people merely use them as sex toys, it seems. And the idea of something that isn’t really alive being bought to fill the hole left by a real person is an interesting, perplexing concept. Luna and Vaughn are crafting a story that’s treading some familiar concepts, but doing it in exciting ways.

Luna solely handles all aspects of the art. He took a year off to learn painting and his comic art has only improved. His attention the small moments, such as when Alex wakes up and has to face the day or the look of defeat when discussing his ex-girlfriend. The way Luna conceptualizes and portrays all this future tech that is new for the book really helps to establish the world of the book and the characters.

Alex + Ada debuts with a strong first issue that delivers some interesting concepts with strong art and solid story. It’s a wonderful thing to see Jonathan Luna back in monthly comics, and Alex + Ada is a good story to see as his return.
