The fascinating world of comic books has had a powerful impact on mainstream culture. From blockbuster movies to hyper-realistic video games, the influence of the comic book aesthetic has permeated many unsuspecting areas of modern day life.

Yet it is the comic convention that provides the focal point for social activity amongst many comic fans. The conventions provide a place where fans from disparate parts of the globe can converge and discuss great comics from the past and present, attend talks, and most importantly dress up as their favourite characters.

What began as a low key event in San Diego in 1970 has now blossomed into a global phenomenon with conventions being held in places as far flung as Russia and India. And naturally, being one of the entertainment centres of the world, Las Vegas is now one of the premier comic convention sites. So here’s a taste of what Las Vegas have to offer.

This April, Las Vegas hosted the Wizard World Comic Con at the Las Vegas Convention Centre. In attendance were stars such as the cast of the hit television series The Walking Dead, as well as Kevin Sorbo from the wonderfully kitsch Hercules TV show. Friday 13th’s Robert Englund provided a reliably unnerving appearance, and there were also newer stars in attendance too such as Tom Felton from the Harry Potter series.

There was also a good variety of costumes being worn, with familiar favourites such as Star Wars characters mixing with newer takes from the Guardians of the Galaxy film proving popular.

And if that’s whetted your appetite, then thankfully more is in store with the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con scheduled to take place in Sin City between 19 and 21 June this year.

Held at the spectacular South Point Hotel and Casino, it features three days where fans can meet creators of their favourite comic books, as well as stars of hit television shows and movies. This year’s event is particularly unmissable, so if you’re short on funds for a ticket, then consider putting your comic book collection on eBay, sell your Christopher Eccleston DVDs to your friends, buy all of the lottery tickets, join this enticing promotion at Uptown Aces and then sell your momma’s jewellery, just don’t miss out!

The convention has already scheduled an appearance by John Barrowman from Doctor Who, as well as meet-and-greets with famous comic artists such as Greg Capullo who draws Batman for DC Comics, and Mark Bagley who illustrates the Spiderman series.

And for those who are planning on getting dressed up for the convention, they’ll be happy to know that there will be a special staging area inside the arena. This will be the place to add some finishing touches to your costume, or even do a bit of touching up should your makeup run off in the desert heat!
