Apparently, it’s a good year to be a Canadian comics fan. Right in the wake of Nelvana’s triumphant return to press, the True Patriot crew have announced a second volume of their hard-hitting wave of (almost) all-new Canadian superheroes! Returning contributors include J. Torres (Bigfoot Boy, Teen Titans Go!) and Ramon Perez (whose work includes long-running webcomic Butternut Squash as well as an adaptation of Jim Henson’s unproduced screenplay, Tale of Sand). Newcomers include Sweet Tooth creator/Justice League of America scribe Jeff Lemire.

Canada kind of gets short shrift when it comes to superhero representation. Ask the average person, and they’ll be able to name Wolverine, and maybe Alpha Flight. (By “average person,” I of course mean “average comics fan.” The average person doesn’t know Wolverine’s Canadian, and has never heard of Alpha Flight.) This is a little odd, considering how much great talent comes out of Canada.

The Kickstarter is here, and the tone is super-excitable and fun. Backer rewards range from PDFs to hardbacks to original art from the creators.

More superheroes is always good. More diverse superheroes is always good. (Before someone calls me out on this, I don’t mean “more heroes” like the shoulderpadded antiheroes of the cynical 90’s comic boom/bust. I mean more adventurers that come from a place of enthusiasm, of fun, of wanting to share your part of the world with others.)
