Marvel Comics has released a five page, unlettered, preview of Sam Humpries and Mike Del Mundo’s Weirdworld #1.
Weirdworld has an illustrious history in the Bronze Age of comic books, debuting in the January, 1976 issue of Marvel Super Action, and continuing its narrative through a one-shot in Marvel Premiere, and a trilogy of issues of the magazine-sized comic book, Marvel Super Special. Originally concerned with the stories of two elves called Tyndall and Velanna, and a dwarf called Mud-Butt, the new series relates the tale of teenage Becca who has become stranded in a world of Crystal Warriors, catbeasts, “swords, sorcery, and rocket launchers.” By making this a story of a teenaged girl straddling mundane and magical worlds, the new Weirdworld invites the reader to recall Alice in Wonderland or the earliest issues of DC Comics’ Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld.
You can preorder Weirdworld #1 until this Monday, and it arrives in comic shops December 16th. Long time fans of Weirdworld will be interested in collecting Pat Broderick’s variant cover; Broderick pencilled two chapters of a Weirdworld story for Marvel Fanfare in 1986.
