A Bunch of Fives: Best Lines That Don’t Get Enough Love
Posted By Ryan Morrissey-Smith on June 10, 2013
A Bunch of Fives is back…again. This time with a positive outlook after the last Bunch of Fives concentrated on the negativity of horrendously bad lines. This time, it’s about the best lines. However, it is not going to be your usual list. This one will focus on the somewhat ignored lines that are great in their own right, but don’t get a look into any of the other best film quote lists. The following list has some of the snappiest, well written and impeccably delivered lines that don’t get enough recognition. Where possible, I’ve linked trailers and the lines, so sit back and enjoy!
WARNING: Occasional bad language. If offended by such language, don’t click the links!
5. Pulp Fiction
A film littered with so many great and memorable lines, Pulp Fiction is probably an easy choice. However, going the road less traveled, this line comes from a character in the film who has no more than about 10 minutes of screen time. The Wolf. Winston Wolf. He doles out the lines left and right as he gets our two favourite hitmen out of pickle. Being matter-of-fact and straight to the point when The Wolf gets there, he wants to know:
“Now you have got a body in a car, minus a head, in the garage. Take me to it.”
4. The Avengers
It’s often that you get some really cool lines in comic book films, but The Avengers is well and truly an exception to the rule (thank you Joss Whedon). When you have some big characters, it takes awhile for them to find their feet, except when you are talking about Tony Stark. Stark’s back and forth with Loki is outstanding, their timing is impeccable and when it gets into a slanging match, Loki tries to threaten Stark with “I have an army”, Stark ever the wise-ass gives this in reply:
“We have a Hulk.”
3. Dusk Til Dawn
A mish-mash of genres in Robert Rodriguez’s vampire flick. There is plenty of crazy and plenty of awesome in this film. George Clooney is super cool as the crim on the run and he also gets the best and funniest lines of the film as well.
“Did they look like psychos? Is that what they looked like? They were vampires. Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them, I don’t give a f*ck how crazy they are.”
2. The Devil’s Rejects
Rob Zombie’s exploitation/road movie, is a non-stop nightmare. It is also the best thing that he has written to date. In a film as grimy and graphic as this, sometimes the writing and dialogue doesn’t seem as important, but in this (and as surprising as it is) film, the writing is very good. Nothing is scarier than a ranting, lunatic psycho and when Otis (Bill Moseley) starts his rants, it leads to the best line of the film. Menacing, threatening and you know that some horrible will happen after.
“I am the devil and I’m here to do the devil’s work.”
1. Kill Bill Vol. 2
Tarantino’s love note/homage to all of his childhood’s kung fu/western flicks is a great film. However, in Kill Bill Vol 2, Tarantino produces one the greatest girl fights caught on film. The Bride listens to Elle tell her that she killed his master and Elle herself gets a great line – “That’s right, I killed your master. And now I’m going to kill you, with your own sword, no less, which, in the very immediate future, will become my sword.” The reply is one the all time great lines…
“B*tch. You don’t have a future.”
So there you have it, five of the best lines that don’t get mentioned nearly enough as they should. Have I missed your favourite? Let us know in the comments below.
