Few other comic book series are worth all the awards as G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona’s Ms. Marvel is, and there are no doubt many fans excited by the news that the first volume of Kamala Khan’s adventures, No Normal, won the internationally coveted Best Series award at the Angoulême International Comic Book Festival….just as there were many fans confused and offended by the host reading a list of fake winners “to challenge the convention of award ceremonies.” See #FauxFauves to follow the history of this crime of ceremony. The host, comedian Richard Gaitet, should be a shoe-in for a Kanye West Award for Award Ceremony Buffoonery, and Ms. Marvel did eventually receive the much-deserved award earned by her creators.
G. Willow Wilson was quoted as saying, “The whole Ms. Marvel team is honored to accept the Angoulême prize for best series. Working on this book and connecting with readers and fans has been a unique joy for all of us. At a time when it sometimes seems the world is in a state of constant conflict, it is a privilege to work on a series that unites us through adventure, humor and a celebration of our common humanity. Thank you to everyone who believes in Kamala Khan, and thank you to Angoulême.”
Ms. Marvel’s win in the Best Series category marks the first time that Marvel Comics has received the award, and this year, Marvel Comics was the only American comic book publisher to take home an award from Angoulême at all.
